Overall Summary of the Course

This course has allowed me to develop and refine my skills in several ways. During this course, I enhanced my understanding in the processes of drawing perspectives, experimentation of different drawing styles and media, creating abstract models, understanding of the processes involved in creating a stop-motion film which explores the spatial and abstract nature of architecture.

The way how each workshop affects the other was also quite interesting, as personally I found that having done Fluid Thoughts to Action beforehand, I was able to draw with greater confidence in the Architecture in Motion workshop. Therefore, the way in which skills gained from a workshop assists in another workshop was quite a significant element throughout the course.

Overall, Architectural Communications for me was a course which conveys how a variety of communicative methods are used not only in the field of architecture but across a whole range of professions. During this course, I undertook Architectural Drawing, Fluid Thoughts to Action and Architecture in Motion, which definitely has widened my understanding and views of the different methods of communicating a conceptual element of architecture. From the three workshops, I have gained an understanding of several communication skills and methods which I can further develop and experiment in my future studies and profession.

Architecture In Motion-The Film

The Narrative

As the water gradually flows through a space, filled with endless columns, a faint light from a distant opening appears. As the journey to that faint light sets in motion, the rigidness of the space, epitomised by the columns, transforms into something more fluid. The experiences of the journey alter as the space rapidly shifts, with water streaming and spiralling into the light, and catching a glimpse of the obscurity behind it.

Workshop 3- Architecture In Motion

Some Stills from the film

The conceptual model of the site derived from the photos

Stills of the model with a lamp behind it

Some A5 Process Drawings

Reflection Statement

This workshop is the most challenging out of the three as it requires the students to make a stop motion film with primarily drawings. The Fluid Thoughts to Action workshop assisted enormously in this workshop as rapid generation of A5 drawings were needed to produce the stop motion film. Significantly, I leanrt the importance of sequencing and arranging/integrating different types of media (photos of model, drawings, reliefs) into a single depiction or illustration, to communicate a concept.

Workshop 2- Fluid Thoughts to Action

Some of the drawings from the A4 sketchbook diary

Collaborative Drawings

The collaborative drawings were quite a challenge as I developed new ways of thinking and viewing an artwork. During the process, we were asked to manipulate and tear up drawings in order to create better artworks. This was a completely new experience for me and during this process, I learnt how each individual's styles of drawings can integrated into a singular piece of work.

5 Individual Drawings (including the exquisite corpse drawing)

Reflection Statement

This workshop mainly focused on the artistic drawing. It involved a lot of observations of spaces and objects, and creating conceptual drawings from these spatial elements. Personally, I found that this workshop gave me the confidence to draw with a range of media (eg. pen, pencil, graphite, charcoal), and especially allowed me to experiment with these different types of drawing media in communicating concepts. After this workshop I had a lot more confidence in my drawing ablity and this factor was certainly helpful in the next workshop, Architectre In Motion, because there was rapid generation of drawings involved.

Workshop 1- Architectural Drawing

Final Drawings

The Exercises

Tea Cup

Perspective drawing
This perspective drawing exercise was helpful in a way that it allowed me to understand the scale of the Rose Seidler house in relation to the Science Lawn. In addition, this exercise helped me in creating small perspective sketches of my concepts within a short period of time, which is quite adequate in communication of ideas.

Reflection Statement

The main thing that I learnt from this workshop is the drafting and technical drawing aspect of architecture. This workshop gave me an understanding of the way how the sections, plans and elevations are laid out on a page, and the importance of this layout in communicating the concepts and ideas across an audience. This workshop focused on presentation drawings, and I was able to bring across the skills that I've learnt from this to design studio, which was quite helpful.
